چکیده

To date, characterisation of dust devils by interpreting spectral measurements taken during a transit over a spectroscopic instrument has yet to be done and would provide valuable information of the physical size, dust load and internal structure of transiting dust devils. A Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer model (MCRT) was developed to investigate the spectral variations during a dust devil transit. Our results show that amount of scattered and the total flux are dependent on different components of the dust devil. The scattered component is highly dependent on the optical depth per unit length (τL) making it sensitive to the internal dust distribution and physical structure. This dependence is not observed for total flux which is strongly dependent on the total amount of dust present along the path joining the light source to the detector.

Power law distribution of pressure drops in dust devils Observation techniques and Earth–Mars comparison

Data from the Pathfinder and Phoenix landers on Mars show transient pressure drops ( 1–4 per day) attributed to nearby encounters with dust devils or dust-free vortices. The distribution of pressure drop amplitudes is consistent with a truncated power law distribution with a slope of 2, similar to that suggested previously for the optical diameters of dust devils. Comparable data from terrestri...

A positive radiative-dynamic feedback mechanism for the maintenance and growth of Martian dust storms

[1] Atmospheric dust disturbances ranging in size from dust devils to planet-encircling dust storms are ubiquitous on Mars. After dust devils, the most common disturbances are localor regional-scale disturbances. The origin of some of these mesoscale systems has been previously investigated and found to be linked to lifting along frontal systems or cap edge circulations. Very little attention h...

Using an Instrumented Drone to Probe Dust Devils on Oregon's Alvord Desert

Dust devils are low-pressure, small (many to tens of meters) convective vortices powered by surface heating and rendered visible by lofted dust. Dust devils occur ubiquitously on Mars, where they may dominate the supply of atmospheric dust, and since dust contributes significantly to Mars’ atmospheric heat budget, dust devils probably play an important role in its climate. The dust-lifting capa...
